It's a sad day for Tottenham Hotspurs FC... Martin Jol was finally relieved from his position after 3 years in charge of club. Assistant coach Chris Hughton and goalkeeper coach Hans Segers were also asked to step down. There had been mixed information on whether Martin was sacked before or after the UEFA cup defeat by Getafe, but it does not really matter anymore. So much promises and expectations at the start of the season, yet we are now struggling at the bottom of the table...
As a Spurs fan, I appreciate the progress made by Martin during his reign in the past few years. We have achieved consecutive 5th places and some good runs in Cups tournament, that has translated to some good financial figures for last year as well. However, having said that, there has been times when you just felt frustrated watching the way the team played where Martin's tactical ability was put in doubts. Mistakes been repeated indicating that the gaffer just does not seem to learn from his earlier errors. For example, playing too defensive after taking the lead... defensive problem not addressed...
To summarize Martin's time in Spurs, I thought he did a great job to bring Spurs forward. He has built a team that plays attractive football and has potential for the future. However he might have guided Spurs as far as he could, so it's time for someone else to bring the club to the next level.
We heard about Juande Ramos taking over but for now (in this post) I like to pay tribute to Martin Jol for the successes and achievements he had brought to Tottenham Hotspurs FC.
Thanks MJ!
